An outstanding composer, pianist, conductor and one of the most significant figures in Azerbaijani music of the 20th century.
Born on November 7, 1917 in Baku, into the family of an engineer-economist. From the age of 12, he studied at the conservatory in two departments simultaneously — piano and music theory.
He became the first Azerbaijani composer to create a new type of national popular song — with a modern intonational structure and a vivid national spirit.
His songs outlived the films they were written for and continue to live a life of their own to this day.
Melodies That Outlived Their Time
His songs were loved by the people from the very first day. "Zeyda", "Golden Ring", "Girls of Baku", "Meeting by the Sea", "Caucasian Toast" — these melodies have forever entered the treasury of Azerbaijani musical culture.
In Memory of Heydar Aliyev
In 1997, Heydar Aliyev personally visited Tofig Guliyev in the hospital.
This was not simply a visit — it was a testament to the place Guliyev held in the history and culture of Azerbaijan.
Two people, two eras — and a profound mutual respect.
